Tea Ceremony
Eastern Leaf Meets English Rose

A cross-cultural dialogue held at the historic Cambridge Union Society, exploring the intersection of Eastern tea philosophy and British academic heritage.

Location: University of Cambridge

Opening the Dialogue

A cultural tea gathering celebrating the dialogue between Eastern and Western traditions recently took place in Cambridge. The event, titled “When Eastern Leaves Meet the English Rose”, was organised by Sino-UK Art Organisation for Sustainable Development and held at the historic Cambridge Union Society.

Scholars, tea practitioners and cultural guests from both China and the United Kingdom came together to explore the cultural significance of tea through performances, lectures and informal discussions.

Professor Alan Macfarlane, Fellow of the British Academy and Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at Cambridge, delivered a lecture titled “The Global Spread of Tea and Its Influence on British Society”. Drawing on historical and anthropological perspectives, he explained how tea travelled through global trade networks and eventually became embedded in British social life.

Opening Remarks in the Chamber

The Academic Session

Wisdom of the Leaves

Founded in 1815, the Cambridge Union Society is one of the world's most prestigious debating institutions. Over the past two centuries, it has hosted historic speeches and debates featuring British prime ministers, international leaders and renowned public intellectuals. As a symbol of intellectual dialogue and free exchange of ideas, the Union provided a fitting setting for this intercultural event.

The programme opened with a performance of the classical Chinese Guqin piece “Flowing Water”, accompanied by a talk on the traditional cultural relationship between tea and the qin. A short documentary titled “Tea from the East: A Cup Through a Thousand Years” then introduced the history and global journey of Chinese tea culture.

The event concluded with remarks from the 811th Mayor of Cambridge, who welcomed the cultural exchange initiative and highlighted the role of tea culture in fostering mutual understanding between cultures.

Harmony of Strings and Senses

History came alive through the strings of the Guqin. The performance of "Flowing Water" illustrated the ancient Chinese philosophy that tea and music share the same heart.

The programme concluded with live demonstrations of Japanese tea ritual and Song Dynasty Dian Cha, revealing the distinct yet connected evolution of tea ceremonies across cultures.
